What's in a name?

What’s in a name?

There is a fun theory, that the film version of the character ‘James Bond’ is simply an alias. That James Bond was never a single individual but a line of people who were assigned the rank of 007 with an ongoing list of James Bonds, to perhaps, confuse enemies of MI6 after the previous Bond retires or dies. This would also fit as an easy explanation as to why James Bond hasn’t aged through six decades of films.  They did it for Q and they did it for M, So why not James Bond?

When Sean Connery’s character was finished playing the roll, George Lazenby’s character was assigned the rank of ‘James Bond - 007’, not just '007'. Hence Lazenby turning to the camera at the beginning of Our Majesty’s secret service stating, “This never happened to the other fellow”. This could easily be dismissed as an attempt to get the audience to warm up to the new actor, but it does nicely feed the narrative of different characters playing Bond.

This allows for the option to diversify a chosen actor to play Bond, without any sort of restrictions on colour, culture, sex or creed in future films. More importantly, it could also introduce James Bond to having fresh character flaws, tastes and any sort of personal baggage that would be unique for each new actor/character that is introduced as James Bond - 007.

It could bring interesting new back stories on how this individual came into being ‘James Bond - 007’. With this twist - other enemies or conflicts they had encountered before becoming James Bond -007 would also murky his backstory.

This approach would also make it far simpler to establish more personal stories and shocking revelations, which should always be in an espionage film. The premise being that each Bond IS different with his/her own path to becoming a spy.

Seeing how James Bond is all about the spy genre, I feel this approach could work to keep the Bond franchise fresh. After 20+ movies and the latest being an attempt to bring back Blofeld, it kind of fell flat and the stories are starting to become a touch redundant. When one already knows the motivations, relationships and characteristics of these enemies you have seen so many times before, it can make for rather tedious viewing.

Give me your thoughts! Is James Bond always the same person and it is something you could never bend on, or could James Bond be your next door neighbor?

On that note, who would you like to see be the next James Bond after Daniel Craig decides to leave?
